What is a cloisonné incense burner?

A cloisonné incense burner is a decorative vessel made using an intricate enamelling technique in which fine metal wires are laid onto a metal surface to create detailed patterns, then filled with coloured enamel and fired to achieve a rich, luminous finish.

This antique example dates to 19th century Japan, during the Meiji era, a period celebrated for some of the finest Japanese cloisonné ever produced.

Although cloisonné had existed in Japan centuries earlier, the skill had largely been lost before being revived in the 19th century, when master artisans brought the craft back to exceptional artistic and technical heights.

Today, Meiji era cloisonné incense burners are admired for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and refined decorative beauty.
