Amitabha Garden began in 2014 with a simple wish: to create a small corner of Chinese tea culture and Buddhist calm beside the Thames in London - a place where temple stillness could exist inside the city.
In Chinese culture, tea was never just a drink. It was how grandparents welcomed guests, marked festivals and created a quiet pause in the middle of ordinary days. In the Buddhist world, monks brewed tea between periods of meditation - to stay awake, to share warmth, and to meet visitors heart‑to‑heart. Over centuries, this became the spirit of “tea and Chan as one”: a simple bowl of tea as a doorway into clarity and presence.
Amitabha Garden grew out of this lineage. What began as a small tea space gradually became a cultural home for Chinese tea, traditional arts and mindful living. Today, our riverside space in Greenwich hosts Chinese tea ceremonies, incense journeys, cultural workshops and contemplative gatherings inspired by Buddhism, Chinese philosophy and literati culture. We work with carefully sourced teas, incense and objects, chosen for their provenance, craftsmanship and the stories they carry.
Every experience is designed as a gentle bridge:
-
between East and West
-
monastery quiet and London streets
-
ancient rituals and contemporary life
We keep the forms rooted - from the way tea is brewed and cups are offered, to how incense is lit and appreciated - while making them welcoming and understandable for people meeting these traditions for the first time. Our aim is not performance, but shared practice: a chance to slow down, listen, and remember what truly matters.
Whether you are beginning your journey with Chinese tea, deepening a Buddhist or contemplative path, or simply seeking a steadier, more mindful way to live in the city, we invite you to sit, breathe, and share a pot of tea with us at Amitabha Garden.
